How many wives can you have in Nigeria?

I am very curious how many wives can a man legally have in Nigeria at the same time? Also how many husbands can a woman have in Nigeria at the same time?

Contrary to popular believe you can LEGALY have only 1 (one) wife in Nigeria, foreign or domestic and vice versa for husband. This is in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

from the constitution of federal republic of nigeria you can just have one wife but religoin believe minimum of 2 and maximum of 4

then how come you hear alot about more than one wife and does religon superceed law? in this case.

In some of the Northern states in Nigeria, where the Shar'ia laws are implemented Religion dictates the law.

In all other parts, peoples views on tradition and religion generally tends to supercede what the law says when it concerns polygamy.

But, of course, bigamy still remains an offense :)

Legally men can marry more than one wife. Like in the North you can take in as many wifes as you can cater for. Our culture is not against it, it supports it.As for bigamy it will remain an offense till kingdom come.
