SLEEPING GOAT

Long, long, long ago, the Goat and the Lion were best of friends. They lived happily together and shared thing in common. One farming season their was drought in the animal Kingdom. The weaker animals were turned to prey, by the bigger ones as the drought became severe.

The Goat had four kids and she had vowed to protect them all. The Lion also had one newly born cub. One day, the Lion visited its friend the Goat and said “dear friend, you know I have just been delivered of a cub and, I will need a helper that will nurse my baby when I am not around”. The Goat nodded it’s heard in affirmation. “Therefore” Lion continued “I have come to ask that one of your kids come along with me to my den until my cub is old enough to handle itself”. “You have surely asked a hard thing” replied the Goat, “but I will send one to you this evening” he concluded. So, when the Lion went out, the Goat summoned it’s four kids and asked them a question. “How many times will you encounter mishap before you can master it”.

The oldest of the four replied “by the third time I should be able to master it. The immediate younger kid said, mummy, surely by the second time I will master it”. The third kid looked up at their Mum and said, “Mum, I can only allow mishap to befall me once, and, I will master it”. To all this replies the mother Goat was sincerely unsatisfied. But, the youngest kid of the four replied and said “Mummy, but why wait for evil to befall you before you master it? I will surely prevent it from happening at all. I will master it as it comes”. To this reply the Goat jumped up and said “You shall go to the Lion’s den, for you alone can successful entertain my friend”. And so, the youngest kid of the Goat was sent forth to baby sit Lion’s cub. Before they went to sleep on their first night, the young kid observed with caution every move of the Lion.

The Lion told the kid that it’s cub will sleep on his right hand while it (the kid) sleeps on the left hand side of the Lion. But, the wise kid reasoned in the night that if the strength of the Lion was on left hand then, it would be wiser to sleep on his right hand side. So the kid stayed awake until the Lion fell asleep. Then it got up and exchanged sides with the sleeping cub of the Lion. Later that night the Lion woke up and extended it’s left paw towards the sleeping animal and strangled it. The Lion hoped to make meal in the morning. Before down, the kid slipped away and ran back to it’s mother.
