NIGERIA's fledgling democracy has gone off the rails, and SA should play its part in pressuring Abuja to put things back on track. President Thabo Mbeki became the first foreign head of state to publicly congratulate Nigerian president-elect Umaru Yar'adua on his victory last month in elections that were brazenly rigged in favour of Nigeria's ruling party. And last Wednesday, Mbeki became one of the first foreign leaders to welcome Yar'adua to his country since that deplorable election. Few expected the elections to live up to international standards. But in the wake of elections in 1999 and 2003 that were openly rigged in favour of President Olusegun Obasanjo and his party, it was hoped the April polls would at least mark a step forward. Instead, the elections marked a long stride backwards.
Rigging, violence and intimidation were so pervasive and on such naked

2 thumbs up for Mr Mbeki for sticking up for Yar'Ardua.

I circled back to Yar'Ardua after I initially derided him. We should give our imperfect democracy a chance to fledge.

So whats your solution...?

And while your answering, spare us the idealistic stuff. What are your pragmatic solutions.

As I said before the elections were not pretty, however, in the present state and age of our young democracy lets stumble for a while but we'll get there.

I was just chatting with a coworker just today, and she was laughing at her brother who lost a congressional election in the Philipines. Reason he lost, the other candidate gave out more money!!

Another colleague from Taiwan chimed in, same goes in Taiwan. The point am trying to make here is that Nigerians always get caught up (rightly or wrongly) in idealistic posture, when the chips are down same people scuttle all decorum.

In conclusion...try to have a positive mental attitude going forward.

You see you can just sit down and conclude that the last election held in Nigeria was rigged. My brother you should know that PDP is the highest populated and the biggest party in Nigeria. And i'm asked do they really won the election? Humm i will say YES.
As for the president, His excellency Olusegun Obasanjo i will give him a full pass mark in his past term. My brother checkam now it's not easy to get Nigeria out of the pit which the military regime left us. Look at the current financial activities that is going on in Nigeria;from the bank's recapitalization to Insurance and the xchange rate of naira to other currencies not to talk of the telecomunication services and his commitment in fighting corruption.
At least if not for any thing thing at all let us appreciate these ones that He has done. Although there are more and more things that needed to be done but i believe that by God's special grace the the new govt of Umar will finish it up and please they all need our prayers and support.
Thanks a lot and JAH BLESS WE ALL

Smugmanuel,
I agree with most of what you wrote. Although there were certain lapses and blunders that OBJ govt committed. I will still applaud him for sparing us Atiku! talk about a man who simply wanted power for the sake of it.
There may have been mago mago but we'll survive.
